How to read ahead. Do to go one move at a time.

Stand tall on the cross trainer and keep both feet on the pedals as they follow the oval. The feet never leave the platforms, so the work stays lower-impact than a run.

Option. Light resistance and a short stride first. Hold the moving handles for balance, or keep the hands on the static rails if the hips sway. Use the recumbent bike if the knee does not like the standing oval.

Show the steps
  1. 1

Step onto the pedals and hold the rails until the oval feels familiar. Soft knees. Ribs stacked over the hips.

  2. 2

Drive through the whole foot. Keep both feet on the pedals for the entire stride.

  3. 3

Pick a light resistance you can hold without bouncing. Add a little only when the hips stay quiet.

  4. 4

Use the moving handles if you want the upper body in, or stay on the static rails for a lower-body pass.

  5. 5

Breathe steadily. A pace you could talk in is enough.

  6. 6

Stop or lighten the resistance if the knee tracks inward, the low back arches, or the feet lift off the pedals.

Cross Trainer

  • Raises the heart rate with no running strike
  • Keeps the feet on the pedals, which cuts impact versus a treadmill jog
  • Offers a standing cardio option when a bike seat is not the day's preference
